Big Ideas

This is an opportunity for you to share a BIG IDEA with the Kirk.  You may have had a great experience somewhere that you think might be beneficial at the Kirk.  Or you’ve seen some area where we could improve to make our church more welcoming, a better place to worship our Lord, or a way we can be more effective in reaching out to others.  Whether it’s a BIG IDEA for our children’s ministry, youth ministry, worship, being a volunteer, missions or whatever, go to our website and let us know!  We may even get in contact with you to understand your idea a little better.

Pledging Examples:

Example #1
Q:  Our family income is $60,000 per year, what is considered our Biblical Tithe?

A: A quick background: "The tithe was a requirement of the law in which all Israelites were to give 10% of everything they earned and grew to the Tabernacle / Temple (Leviticus 27:30; Numbers 18:26; Deuteronomy 14:24; 2 Chronicles 31:5)."  Having said that, although the New Testament does not identify a specific amount or percentage to give, it does talk about the importance and benefits of giving. They should give as they are able, in keeping with his income. Sometimes that means giving more than a tithe, sometime that may mean giving less than a tithe. It all depends on the ability of the Christian and the needs of the church. Each and every Christian should diligently pray and seek Gods wisdom as to whether to participate in tithing and/or how much he or she should give (James 1:5). Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7)."

Given the Old Testament scripture;
10% of $60,000 = $6,000 or $500/month

Example #2
Q:  We are on a tight budget, we want to pledge but we’re not sure we can make it to 10%.  What percentage is a gift of $4,200 ($350/month) with an income of $70,000?

A: 6.0%

Again quoting Paul in the New Testament:  “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7)."  It would be great if every believer could give 10% of their earnings, but the realty is that this is not always possible.

Additional examples:

8% of $35,000 = $2,800 or $234/month
6% of $55,000 = $3,300 or $275/month

Pension Protection Act extended through 2009

We want to let you know that the Pension Protection Act of 2006 has  been extended through 2009 as part of the Federal Rescue Plan.  This allows for anyone who is age 70 ½ or over to make a distribution of up to $100,000 from their IRA without taxes being applied.  The distribution must be made directly to a charitable organization such as the Kirk. This extension allows qualified tax-free charitable donations of up to $100,000 for each of the years of 2008 and 2009.

The distribution may be from a traditional IRA or Roth IRA and cannot be from employer-sponsored retirement plans, including SIMPLE IRAs and simplified employee pensions (SEPs).  For details, please contact your financial advisor.

This is a wonderful opportunity to make a significant gift to the Kirk.  Your financial gifts are extremely valuable to EVERY ministry here at the Kirk. Thank you for your faithful generosity at this important time.  Your donation may be made to either the Kirk of the Hills or to Joppa Church.

You can schedule regular payments and view a history of your online giving. If you haven't yet created a profile, we encourage you to do so. (You must create a profile to access the recurring payment and history features.)

Please note that the church strongly discourages online giving which leads to personal indebtedness.
For that reason, we prefer that you use an E-check draft from your banking account, a debit card, or credit card which is paid monthly.

More about Online Giving

Online giving is available again to those who desire to use it. You are free to give via the weekly offering in the worship service, by mailing your contribution in to the office, or now online and we welcome you to give whatever God has called you to, however God has called you to.

You can also designate where your gift goes (general fund, building program, missions, etc.) and the frequency in which you give. You will also be able to track your online giving by logging in nd viewing your history. Online giving is secure and tax deductible. Online giving allows you to set-up your giving using either a credit card, debit card or an automatic bank draft to your account.

*Note online records will not reflect any manual giving.

Benefits of online giving:

You can prioritize giving in your budget.
The Bible indicates giving is to be a "first" and not a last or leftover matter in my life. Read Proverbs 3:9-10. It is easy to let our standards and intentions be compromised by the press of expenses and billing cycles. With online giving, your giving is done automatically.

You can increase your faithfulness.
Have you ever forgotten your gift, left it at home or pledged to double it in the future? Have you had times where you have fallen behind because of travel and other schedule interruptions? Online giving provides a way to strengthen your faithfulness.

You can help your church.
Through online giving, you expedite your gift, simplify our accounting, and strengthen our base of regular support.

You can encourage faith and faithfulness in the lives of fellow believers.
As you plan and prioritize your giving, you will lead the way for others to grow and mature in their spiritual stewardship. Being a forerunner in this new area of planned giving, you can provide personal testimony and example for others to follow.

End of Year Giving

Once again it is time to consider year-end tax planning.  Remember - to get a 2008 tax deduction for any contribution (cash, stock or property), it must be received by the Kirk or postmarked by Wednesday, December 31, 2008.  Often you can avoid paying tax on the appreciation of stock by donating it to the Kirk and you will still receive a tax deduction for the stock's full fair market value.  This tax treatment remains one of the best planning tools available for charitable giving. If the stock you wish to donate has not appreciated in value, you should consider selling it first and donating the proceeds to the church so you can take advantage of  any tax loss that might be available.  Contact Bonnie, 494-7088 x201 or bgorrell@thekirk.com, to obtain the Kirk account number for your brokerage firm. Your financial gifts are extremely valuable to EVERY ministry here at the Kirk. Thank you for your faithful generosity at this important time.  2008 Contribution Statements will be sent to you in January.  If you have questions about your donations this year, please contact Joyce at jbates@thekirk.com.
